Job Description -  Broadcast Engineering Supervisor 

Contract: Full Time

Reporting to:  Head of Systems & Engineering, Premier League Studios 

Role Overview   

Premier League Studios are looking for two Broadcast Engineering Supervisors to lead a high performing first line broadcast engineering team at their new production facility in West London. This is an exciting opportunity for individuals who are passionate about delivering critical broadcast and content services in a high value, fast-paced and automation led environment.

The Broadcast engineering supervisors will manage a team of people and be responsible for the real time management, support and administration of complex data led and automation driven video and audio infrastructure including studios, live galleries, operations centre, post-production and MAM facilities.

Reporting to the Head of Systems & Engineering, they will be responsible for ensuring the continuous uptime of critical high value content services, servicing and maintaining infrastructure in line with manufacturers guidelines and good practice as well planning and delivering technology projects and upgrades.

Calm under pressure and with excellent communication skills they will manage priorities and incidents, key stakeholders, third party vendors and their teams.

The Broadcast Engineering Supervisors will work closely with wider Premier League Studios technology colleagues and when necessary, engage with colleagues across the wider PL business ecosystem.

You will be expected to attend the office or site visits in line with our company policy. All staff liaise closely with their line manager to manage their time appropriately and according to their work and team requirements.

The role

Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Manage, lead, develop and inspire the first line Broadcast Engineering Team
  • Be the lead technical authority and escalation / incident manager on Premier League match days
  • Work with IT colleagues to monitor and optimize live and file media networks, addressing issues related to multicast, Quality of Service (QoS), and redundancy protocols
  • Work closely with operations colleagues and third-party suppliers to manage and maintain service and respond to incidents.
  • Responsible for on-premise and SAAS Broadcast infrastructure, systems, and services.
  • Have excellent ST-2110 and NMOS knowledge and experience
  • Deep understanding of live and post-production broadcast workflows
  • Developing complex UItra-HD and HDR workflows
  • Ensure business and industry best practices are followed
  • Maintain and develop disaster recovery plans
  • Ensure all planned and remedial works are managed in the ITSM ticket system
  • Plan and implement upgrades and patches
  • Lead projects including design, document, implementation and test
  • Support production colleagues working onsite and remotely
  • Provide technical leadership in response to service impacting issues
  • Stay abreast of emerging technologies, industry standards and practices to recommend and implement improvements to existing system
  • Technical authority for change management
  • Maintain comprehensive documentation of system configurations, network diagrams, and standard operating procedures.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to integrate broadcast equipment into IP-based workflows
  • Manage suppliers against SLA’s and contracts
  • Monitor and report service availability

Requirements for the role

  • Proven experience working in a similar broadcast or production management role
  • Team management, development and coaching experience
  • Experience with Ultra HD & HDR standards and working practices
  • Familiarity with cloud-based broadcast solutions and virtualisation technologies
  • Ability to manage, lead, and prioritise tasks in a high-pressure environment
  • Project management and stakeholder management experience
  • Experience managing budgets, hardware lifecycles and maintenance schedules
  • Strong verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to translate technical language to non-technical people
  • Experience implementing Broadcast infrastructure upgrades and refreshes
  • Experience using an ITSM or ticketing system to track and resolve issues
  • Hands on and remote technical troubleshooting skills
  • Must be able to demonstrate experience and skills in the following core technologies:
    • ST-2110 & NMOS networks deployed on Arista fabric & EVS endpoints
    • Ross Ultrix Platform & Carbonite switchers
    • Skyline Dataminer
    • EVS Cerebrum
    • Viz Mosart
    • TAG Multiviewers
    • EVS XT Servers
  • Would be useful to demonstrate experience and skills in some of the following technologies:
    • Fonn Saga
    • Fonn Mimir
    • Qvest Quib
    • Calrec Audio Consoles
    • Riedel Artist Communication systems
    • Xytech scheduling system
