Department / Team function:

Media Technology & Operations is a group that is passionate about building and supporting technology to enable storytellers to connect, entertain and inform audiences everywhere. The CNN London Bureau MTO team focuses on the broadcast and IT technology needs of our CNN partners for newsgathering, programming and digital.

 

Areas of Focus / Responsibility:

Provide expert knowledge for the operational support of broadcast and IT equipment and infrastructure that is within an on-air and fast-paced news environment.

Our team works various shift patterns, including late finishes and weekend work. Covering shift work should be considered a standard part of the role.
As a shift engineer, you’ll need to be proactive and able to work independently in high pressured situations and as part of a team during busier production hours.
You will need an ability to delegate tasks during major technical incidents and breaking news.
Proactively design, initiate and document projects that address problems, equipment renewal and expansion of the broadcast and IT infrastructure.
Install and configure computer hardware operating systems and applications. Utilise with a high degree of competence a variety of computer-based tools that interact, at all levels, with a production infrastructure environment.
Maintain as a subject-matter-expert a close working relationship with local and remote technical and operational teams across broadcast and IT areas.
Communication skills are also vital; sharing of knowledge within the engineering team, ensuring stakeholders and the wider production team are informed on the latest developments. Keeping our support ticketing system updated with the latest information and documenting any changes.
Understanding of vendor support contracts, and channel feedback to appropriate vendors to enhance usability and function of our production products and systems.
Identify suitable training opportunities and areas of self-growth.
Supporting more junior roles, particularly Apprentices with peer training and guidance.
Proactively work on securing enterprise and broadcast infrastructure, while working closely with cybersecurity specialists.
Initiate and maintain different logging and monitoring tools, identifying opportunities for business enablement through the smart use of technology.
Organize and facilitate upgrades within a formal ITIL process.
Support our technology logistics and help keep our team organized with tracking technology assets and ensuring adequate spares are maintained for business needs.
Perform tasks and other duties as assigned.

 

What must they possess in order to be successful in this role?:

• Requires 8+ years’ experience in a related area.

Educated to BSc degree (or equivalent) in Broadcast Engineering, Media Technology, Computer Science or a related field.
A Cisco networking certificate, such a CCNA, is highly desirable as is any cloud infrastructure certification.
An understanding that we support a news organisation that is on-air 24 hours every day.
A flexibility to work a shift pattern which may include unsociable working hours.
Some major newsgathering events may require infrequent travel for engineering support, including occasional international travel.
You will need to be passionate about wanting to pursue a career in technology with an interest in news media.
Experience of project management and ITIL processes.
Self-starter who is not afraid to get dirty and take on anything that comes their way.
Strong communication skills, ability to explain a situation and set expectations.
Must be hard working and passionate about their craft.
An ability to multi-task.

 

Onsite Working - This role is advertised as Onsite, meaning all working hours and days (regardless of shift pattern) will be carried out at the place of work. Subject to any applicable laws, WBD / your Line Manager reserves the right to change this working agreement, where this is essential to business needs and upon reasonable notice to you.
