Applied Research Engineer

Hitomi

Hybrid, working partly at home and partly from our Hitomi Head Office in, Cookham Dean, Berkshire

Report to: CTO and Co-Founder, James Robinson
Team: Engineering
Working Hours: Full Time (37.5 hours) Monday – Friday
Salary: £40,000-£55,000 Depending on experience
Contract Type Permanent

Role Overview

Hitomi develops advanced timing, synchronisation, and signal analysis technologies used by leading broadcasters, production companies, and live event operators worldwide.

Our products are used in high-end professional broadcast environments, supporting tier-1 customers across live production, network broadcasting, sports, and premium media workflows.

Our work sits at the intersection of software engineering, signal processing, audio and video analysis, real-time systems, and applied mathematics.

We are seeking an exceptional Applied Research Engineer to work directly with the CTO on the development of next-generation algorithms, analysis techniques, and experimental technologies.

This role combines research, experimentation, software development, and technical investigation. The successful candidate will help transform early-stage ideas and prototype algorithms into robust, validated, engineering-ready technologies suitable for deployment in commercial broadcast products.

The role is highly exploratory and practical in nature, involving real-world experimentation, software prototyping, data analysis, algorithm refinement, and computational optimisation.

Responsibilities
•Work directly with the CTO on advanced algorithm and technology development
•Rapidly understand and explore complex mathematical and technical concepts
•Develop audio and video analysis algorithms for professional broadcast applications
•Develop experimental software prototypes and validation tools
•Investigate algorithm behaviour, edge cases, and failure modes
•Source, generate, and analyse real-world datasets and media
•Build automated testing, analysis, and benchmarking workflows
•Refine and optimise algorithms through structured experimentation
•Explore efficient GPU and software implementations of computationally intensive algorithms
•Investigate the use of AI and machine learning techniques where appropriate
•Challenge assumptions and propose alternative technical approaches
•Produce clear technical documentation and engineering handover material
•Collaborate with engineering teams during productisation

Desired Skills and Experience
We are more interested in technical capability, curiosity, and problem-solving instinct than a specific checklist of qualifications.

Strong candidates are likely to have experience or interest in several of the following areas:

•Strong mathematical and analytical ability
•Excellent software development skills, particularly in Python and/or C++
•Signal processing, audio processing, image processing, or video analysis
•GPU computing or performance optimisation
•Real-time or high-performance software systems
•AI, machine learning, or computational analysis techniques
•Experimental software development and prototyping
•Statistics and data analysis
•Automated testing and validation systems
•Broadcast, media, or video technology

Relevant degrees may include:

•Engineering
•Physics
•Computer Science
•Mathematics
•Electronic Engineering
•Or similar technical disciplines
However, exceptional self-taught candidates will also be considered.

Personal Qualities:
The ideal candidate is likely to be:
•Highly curious and naturally investigative
•Technically creative and intellectually independent
•Comfortable working with partially formed ideas and ambiguous problems
•Practical and engineering-focused rather than purely academic
•Self-motivated and capable of independent exploration
•Excited by difficult technical challenges
•Comfortable discussing and challenging technical ideas openly
•Detail-oriented and methodical
•Passionate about understanding how systems really behave

Example Areas of Work
Example work may include:

•Developing new algorithms for analysing audio, video, images, or time-varying signals
•Building experimental tools to test whether an algorithm works in real-world conditions
•Finding, generating, and curating test material to exercise difficult edge cases
•Using Python, C++, AI tools, or GPU-based processing to explore and accelerate new approaches
•Analysing large quantities of media or measurement data to identify patterns and failure modes
•Creating repeatable tests, benchmarks, and visualisations to compare algorithm performance
•Optimising promising approaches so they can move from prototype code towards product-ready implementation
•Producing clear notes, test results, reference code, and explanations that allow the engineering team to take the work forward.

Why Join Hitomi
This is an opportunity to work on genuinely difficult and original technical problems with real-world impact across global broadcast and live production environments.
The successful candidate will work closely with the CTO, contribute to future products and patents, and play a significant role in shaping the future direction of Hitomi’s advanced technology development.
